El Rey, Mé

Located 10 kilometers (6.5 miles) south of the Convention Center in front of the Caesars Park hotel, the original name of this place is unknown. The area was christened El Rey in the 20th century in honor of the sculpture discovered there. This significant archaeological find depicts a human face adorned in the dress of Mayan kings, or those of high rank. It currently resides in el Museo de Arqueologia. El Rey is estimated to have been built around 300 A.D., and is the largest archaeological site on Cancun Island. It is composed of two major plazas, but the site's most stunning offering is its largest building. This old Mayan palace is shaped like a pyramid with a platform at the top. The platform is believed to have been used as an observatory. You will also find some fascinating murals at El Rey, depicting humans and other significant elements of life at that time. The entrance fee is 28 pesos (US$2.8) and it is open from 8 AM until 7 PM everyday.
