Handy information Akumal
Office of TourismThe Office of tourism can provide information about events in and around Akumal. If you can't make it to the office, you are always welcome to ask the people at the front desk of your hotel for some ideas. Akumal has a single tourist office located on on the main road into town from Carretera 307 (Federal Highway 307) just before the site. The office is in front of the Hekab Be library, right next to the parking lot.
Mailing and shippingAkumal has a very small post office located by la Cancha (the basketball court), | | La cancha or basketball court, Akumal | in a small building marked Oficina de Correos. The office only opens on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 to 14:30 hrs. (11 AM to 2:30 PM). You can also usually get stamps at the reception desk in most hotels, and they will probably mail your letters if you ask. It takes around two weeks for letters to reach the U.S. and a little longer for Europe. If you want to ensure that a letter will arrive, you can register it, but, of course, be prepared to pay an additional fee. When sending packages, FedEx, UPS, or any other major and reliable shipping company is your best bet. While none of these shipping companies is located in Akumal, you can find offices in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Sending parcels via the post office, while cheap, is unreliable and not recommended.
Phone and fax services and Internet accessAs is often the case just about everywhere, collect calls from Mexico to any place in the country or abroad can be very expensive. Phone calls are charged by your hotel to your bill. You can also buy phone calling cards in many shops with the blue and yellow LADATEL sign. The cards can be used from most any public phone in Mexico and you can expect to pay around $5 pesos (US$0.50) per minute for calls to the United States and about $20 pesos (US$2) for calls to Western Europe. Many hotels provide faxing services for guests. Check with your hotel for fees. Most of the public phones are located by super Chomax (the grocery store) across the street from la Cancha. Your hotel may provide Internet connectivity. Check with them for fees. If you prefer to use the Internet to contact family and friends, there a few Internet cafes in Akumal. The most popular is the one located in Plaza Akuna I, near la Cancha (the basketball court), on the floor above Peak Gym. The price per hour is $40 pesos (U.S.$4).
