If you want to explore the area by car, you can head south from the federal highway in the direction to Tulum. Before entering Tulum town you turn right in the direction to Coba. The road is well signed and there is no way to get lost. There will always be signs pointing to either Valladolid or Chichen Itza. The road passes through Valladolid, and continue to Chichen Itza and Merida. Along the way you will encounter many towns and villages and will have to pass through them. Before entering a village or town there are many speed bumpers. It is not advisable drive at night.

You can take bus to Valladolid at the bus station. The service is almost continuous. The first bus departs at 5 AM, the next ones at 6, 9, 11, 11:30 AM and at 2:30, 3, 4:30, 5:30 and 10:30 PM every day. It takes around 3 to 4 hours to get there. If traveling by bus, take the road that leads to Merida. Head at the end of Avenida Tulum, and turn left on Avenida Portillo. From Cancun there are two roads, one toll free and a second one that is expensive. The toll highway is faster since you avoid passing through many villages and towns. Another way to get there by bus is heading south in the direction to Playa del Carmen, once you pass the airport, there is another deviation that points to Merida, eventually you will be in the same road as if you were traveling by the Avenida Portillo.
